The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
