Sovereign to Share Personal Address on His Health Battle in Television Broadcast
The Monarch has recorded a first-hand account regarding his experience with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer campaign, organised by a leading cancer charity and a major network.
Official sources said the King would discuss his "healing process" as a individual battling cancer, in a televised statement on Friday at 20:00 GMT.
The address, taped inside a royal residence a fortnight ago, will highlight the critical nature of cancer screening checks to increase the likelihood more people catch the condition at an initial point.
This represents a rare update on the health of the Sovereign, who has been receiving ongoing care since the news was shared in early last year. However, it is believed unlikely the King will specify his specific form of cancer.
The Campaign's Core Mission
The annual charity event each year raises funds for scientific studies and patient care and prompts people to get check-ups to improve the odds of an prompt identification.
The King's relative openness about his condition, and managing the disease, has been designed to increase understanding and to persuade more people to get screened - and this will be taken a step further with this unique direct participation.
To date the King's primary strategy to his cancer has been to keep working, preserving a full diary despite his frequent sessions of treatment, and he seems not to have desired to be overshadowed by his condition.
The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, taking several international tours, including to Italy and Canada, and receiving the largest volume of official guests to the UK for a generation, which included the German president last week.
The Televised Evening Programme
The upcoming charity programme on the network, hosted by presenters including Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will encourage people not to be frightened of getting preventative tests.
The hosts have been had experience with cancer - Davina McCall revealed last month she had had an operation for breast cancer, while another presenter was overcame thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Host Hills has previously spoken about his parent, who had a diagnosis and then later leukaemia.
The broadcast will reach out to the approximate 9m people in the UK who Cancer Research UK says are not up to date with public health checks, with an website to let people determine if they are able for tests for key health indicators.
In an attempt to explain health tests and show the value of prompt detection there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at two Cambridge hospitals in Cambridge.
"I want to remove the anxiety out of health checks and demonstrate everyone that they are not alone in this," said a presenter.
The Landscape of Health Checks
Currently in the UK, there are a number of NHS cancer screening programmes - for specific cancers - available to eligible individuals.
A new scheme for lung health is also being slowly rolled out for individuals at high risk of developing the disease, primarily aimed at people in a specific age bracket, who have a smoking history or have smoked in the past.
Men may discuss specific tests, but there is no national programme in place.
Charitable Impact
The Stand Up to Cancer campaign, which has collected £113m over the past decade, is financing multiple research studies encompassing 13,000 patients.
The Monarch, in a address for attendees at a event for related organisations in the spring, had referred to recognising the "intimidating and at times frightening situation" for cancer sufferers and their loved ones.
But he noted his personal journey of managing cancer had shown him that "the most difficult times of disease can be brightened by the support of carers," as he thanked those who looked after individuals with the illness.
Royal representatives has not disclosed what kind of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has undergone. The King's cancer was discovered subsequent to he had undergone a routine operation.
