Nicolas Cage's Jesus-Themed Horror Movie Is Less Extreme as It Sounds

Nicolas Cage is likely the perfect selection for a bold horror film about the biblical figure, though not for the reasons some viewers might assume. Truthfully, Cage does not even portray the central religious figure in the new film: his character is referred to merely as The Carpenter. The actor is cast as a father figure of this story, striving to keep his religious convictions while his son (acted by Noah Jupe), his adolescent adopted son, starts to display miraculous gifts. The reason it's challenging to picture any other leading star taking this character is that although the figure grows burdened with multiple challenges, Cage himself looks practically touchingly convinced that the gloomy, grim feature is worth his time.

The Actor's Recent Career Choices

Cage has spending that time more carefully lately. He still stars in additional projects than most casual fans may ever watch — for instance, are you aware that he has made three separate frontier films over the last few years? — yet he also includes prestige independent films like Dream Scenario, another notable movie, and a further title. The Carpenter’s Son appears to be a similar project, in that it’s borderline horror, likely to stir debate, and approaches a campy-sounding premise quite seriously.

The Film's Storyline and Handling

Unfortunately, filmmaker Lotfy Nathan fails to repay the audience's focus. The Carpenter’s Son opens in a interestingly wandering context, presented as drawing from an unknown scripture about the early years of Jesus. The Carpenter, The Mother, and their son relocate from place to place, fearful of doctrinal intolerance or distrust regarding The Boy’s mysterious gifts. “Disaster trails us,” Cage sadly observes. This persists when sinister entities focus on them where they currently live, getting a jump-start on the traditional religious challenge for the youth.

Occasionally, the movie mirrors an Exorcist-style horror film, but none of the lead characters are directly possessed. Rather, they are increasingly alienated mutually, while these powers affect a nearby girl (Isla Johnston, credited as “The Stranger”) that the son connects to, and provides all troubling visions of a bleak destiny. Cage's role notably grapples with his position in the narrative, at times berating the boy he can’t fully understand.

Discussion and Care

This material is likely to stir disagreement, and Nathan treats it with much delicacy — overly, perhaps. The concept of a young man facing his future martyrdom and seduced by mysterious forces is truly terrifying, but the filmmaker may be wary of looking exploitative and anxious to telegraph his intentions, thus he frequently retreats into darkly ominous filming. The roles brood incessantly — FKA Twigs, who showed genuine potential in the 2024 Crow remake, surprisingly — cedes her acting to her religious attire, sometimes broken up by some gruesome scary visuals.

Cage's Performance and Film's Shortcomings

Simultaneously, the actor dabbles in exactly the kind of melodramatic acting that his ironic fans might be looking for. There is a moment (shown) in promotional material where Cage flips out and screams “I’ve lost my faith!” When this sort of florid outburst is included in your Jesus-themed horror movie, possibly a more brazenly silly method would make better use of Cage’s willingness to be extreme as required. Instead, The Carpenter’s Son more closely resembles the less successful low-budget productions Cage made over the 2010s — excluding the campy action films instead the serious stories and paranormal movies that typically appear interesting, and frequently include a few choice Cage moments, but ultimately feel like, indeed, cheap home video fare.

Truthfully, some of those, although simpler, were easier to view in general. This is when I have to violate my personal rule, not religious but career-related: Long ago, an admired senior convinced me to eliminate descriptive terms like “boring” or “dull” from my analytical lexicon. Such terms communicate minimal except a personal and vaguely expressed impatience, withdrawing from the duty of clearly expressing the mental and sensation of seeing a specific film. It's hard to convey monotony without appearing dull personally. It's equally vague as terming a movie “notable.” “Elaborate,” in other words.

But I must confess, I felt uninterested for a large part of The Carpenter’s Son. On the positive side, it’s a devotional type of stultification, not due to The Carpenter’s Son is moralizing, but as it demands a kind of dutiful submission to sit through it. Eventually in the beginning, this feature enters a repetitive rhythm of simmering distress, and never really
