New York's next mayor states his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, hesitated to declare this decision immediately following his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to focusing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his humble Astoria digs.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.
The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
