Ghostface Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he received the news from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
