Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company
This latest development intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how its independence had been undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
